The big news for lovers of Holdens
Camira came in 1984 with the release of the "JD" model
and the introduction of the all new fuel injected 1.8
liter Family II engine. The new motor became standard
on all models except the SL.
Externally the car was far more handsome, with modern
halogen headlights and a revised front end treatment that
cleverly disguised the fact that most of the panels were
carried over from the JB.
To many observers it appeared as though Holden had done
away with the grille, but of course the air intake was
located below the front bumper.
Midway through the life of the JD the 1.6 engine was phased
out entirely, and the existing 1.8 modified so as to comply
with the governments unleaded fuel regulations.
Power output was reduced, but the designers were able
to better the fuel economy figures as a suitable compromise
by employing a different fuel injection system. |
