The General Motors Trained
Dealer Service Man |
|
(circa 1958) |
"Well there's nothing wrong with the transmission.
You know Mr. Fields it just seems to be the transmission,
all you need is a throttle linkage adjustment, I can
have it ready for you in an hour". The reason Mike
Brown found the trouble so quickly, he's not just a
service man, he's a General Motors trained dealer service
man.
He got a job with a GM dealer who kept his eye
out for good servicemen, and he decided Mike would make
top notch material. They had a talk, shook hands on
it, and the next thing Mike knew he was on his way to
one of the 30 General Motors Service Training centres
established all over the country, with his expenses
and his salary paid!
When he got there he wasn't quite
sure what to expect, but he rapidly found out just how
thorough the training was, just how much was expected
of him. In class-rooms, and in practical shop work,
General Motors instructors went over every single detail
with Mike and all the other students. He got a chance
to work with equipment the kind of which he had only
read about, while every detail of good servicing was
patiently explained and illustrated.
Mike found himself
working night-times harder than he had ever worked at
school, but with his GM dealer paying his expenses and
GM it'self footing the training bill he was able to
put in full time, and to stay with it even when the
going was rough. Thanks to the book work he found that
complex units like transmissions were much easier to
work with, and that he was able to service new model
carburetors much more quickly.
Even when class hours
were over, Mike and some of his friends would argue
over equipment such as the new air-conditioning systems.
It was the hardest study course he ever had, but Mike
found out how much he had learned when he was able to
handle a linkage system that had been deliberately changed,
and do it in almost no time. Thanks to the GM service
training centre he is one of the best trained service
men in the country, so backed by his GM technical training
he finds the trouble in short order. "All you need
is a throttle linkage adjustment, I can have it ready
for you in an hour".
