When Tickford Vehicle Engineering was established, Ford fans were once again salivating for a new performance Falcon. Set up as a joint venture with Ford Australia, one of the first models to come from this operation was the hot new S XR6. Released in October 1992, Tickford improvement gave the 4 liter enough performance to match a V8. A month later a new GT Falcon was unveiled to celebrate 25 years .In early 1993, a lap sash rear seat belt became standard - a first for an Australian car.

The VR Commodore Series was more than a simple facelift of the VP, the only body panels being carried over being the roof and door skins. The shape was now softer and more aerodynamic, and with additions such as the first Australian built car to offer a driver's airbag, the VR was unquestionably superior in every department over previous iterations. While the newly introduced Acclaim (and Calais) had the air-bag fitted as standard equipment, it was made available across the range at a (for the time) extremely affordable $990.
