The mighty 560SEL, the Mercedes "S" class
(Sonderklasse) flagship for 1988. Powered by the fearsome
5.6 liter V8 producing 300bhp (220kw) the car could
do 0 - 100kmh in 7.2 seconds, presumably with the executive
in the back remaining blisfully unaware that his chauffer
was having a fang!
The 1988 model lineup was a further refinement to the
"S" class sedans first introduced in 1979.
Modifications had included the front and rear spoilers
being integrated into the bumper design, and the suspension
had been modified to provide better handling, safety
and riding comfort.
The standard equipment list was extensive, and included
such features as new flush halogen headlights, hydropneumatic
level control, electronically adjustable steering column,
ABS and SRS systems and even removeable footrests for
the rear passengers.
Perhaps too recent to be collectable, depreciation has
seen them fall within reach of the masses - provided of
course the family budget can support the 560SEL's liking
for the bowser.
