Mercedes 220
The 220b model was given an entirely new body style in 1959, and introduced Mercedes customers to the new "fintail" design.

But the design differences over the previous model were not to stop there. The new model featured a wider radiator grille, new dual vertical headlights, a wrap around windscreen and wide rear window.

The 2195cc engine produced 95bhp, allowing the new model to reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h (99.5mph). As with the model it was replacing (the 219), the new 220 was available with the "Hydrak" transmission until 1961.

In fact for almost a year, between 1961 and 1962, the 220 was available in manual form only until Mercedes introduced a new "Auto" transmission as an option.

The "Hydrak" transmission therefore had a short life, no doubt due to the many burnt out clutches, and while the Hydrak remains a unique curiosity today if considering the purchase of a 200 "Finnie" we would recommend either the manual or traditional auto of post 1962 vintage.
