The successful Escort Twin Cam was replaced by the more powerful Escort in 1970, the RS1600.

The letters "RS" stood for "Rally Sport", a brand name invented by Ford and one that continued for many years. Quickly the term "RS" came to be known for high performance Ford's.

As on the Twin Cam, the RS1600 used a reinforced two door shell and featured wide arches, wheels and quarter bumpers.

In place of the Lotus Twin Cam was a 16 valve Cosworth BDA unit measuring 1599cc. The RS1600 produced 110bhp and could reach a top speed of around 180 km/h.
